How to record music with your computer

Musicians now have the ability to record their music on their own computer. Limitations come from the amount of RAM and hard drive space available mainly. What you'll need to record is a computer with a sound card and software to do the multi tracking fro you. With this you will be able to record several tracks of guitar, drums, vocals, etc. and mix into one song. You can even put these on the web so that anyone can hear them. You'll need to understand real audio to do that and get a web site. Click here for details on that

Software

Computer system requirements vary with different software.  Software is available at DC Music. Take a look at our software section here under the recording section. Software will allow you to use your computer to record your music and starts at only $24.99. You can also use the new Zoom PS-04 Palm studio to record your music or the Boss or Zoom hard disk recorders.

Connecting to your PC

By MIDI you can connect through your soundcard's game port using a Soundcard cable or you can use your USB port with a USB cable. To bring audio into your computer you'll need a good soundcard using the line input. Click here to see soundcards that have more options for recording musicians. Click here for audio interfaces to your computer.

CD recorders

Once you've recorded your songs, you can even make your own CD's. To do this you will need a CD recorder. Stop at your local electronic store (Comp USA, Staples etc.) to purchase that.

Drum machines
Take a look at some of the most popular drum machines on the market. Zoom and Boss are featured. Also, click here to see some very nice drum machine programming books and books with many rhythm patterns you can use.

Books on recording, mastering MIDI drum patterns etc.
For books like Home recording basics, MIDI basics, Modern recording techniques, the basics of sound and sound systems and more click here.

Software to the rescue (accompaniment)

Software is available now called Band in a Box that is simply a band in a box of software. You select the style, the key, the chord changes and the next thing you know you have instant backing music. Jammer professional is a program that will also provide pre-set pattern but also allow you to edit or create your own patterns.

Looping music and MIDI patterns

Many are now using loops to make music. These can be in the form of audio loops, or MIDI loops. Loops are small sections of music usually a measure long that you can string together to make a song. Loops are available for most all instruments and in almost any style of music. For a detailed look at loops and MIDI patterns, take a look at this link

Songwriting

Songwriting is a wonderful topic. Some resources for you are the Songwriter's resource center, Writingsongs.com and the Christian Songwriting Organization. These sites offer tips, information, books, and much more. The Songwriting Fundamentals book has just been released and you may find it helpful.

Once you have the computer and software, you just need to record in from your keyboard, amplifier, or mixer into the sound card audio input and begin recording and mixing your music.

Singers!

If your a singer and want to be able to let people hear you sing there are ways! You could use Karaoke software and sing to an already recorded song. You could take that recording and put it on the internet. You could also take a recording you already have and record it to your computer via the line input of your soundcard and recording software and then take that audio file and put it on the internet.
